Donegal creative duo Isla McGuckin and Laura Buchanan are launching a new book celebrating the life experiences, unexpected twists and defining moments that have shaped the lives of people with a connection to the county.

Titled Trace, the publication brings together an eclectic collection of personal stories from older people, exploring the turning points, chance encounters, split-second decisions and strokes of good and bad luck that have influenced their journeys through life.

Following the positive reception to Leap, a previous publication celebrating Donegal’s creative community, the duo are hoping their latest book will offer readers a meaningful and thought-provoking gift in time for Christmas.

From the freedom and independence of owning a first car to the heartbreak of unrequited love, the stories reflect the varied experiences that make up a life. They also explore passions pursued, opportunities missed, life-changing accidents and moments of incredible fortune.

Woven throughout the collection are warmth, wit and the wisdom that comes from lived experience, offering readers an insight into the people and events that have helped shape the lives of contributors.

Professionally edited and beautifully produced, Trace also includes space for readers to record some of their own memories and experiences, allowing the book to become a personal keepsake that can be shared with future generations.

The publication is a collaboration between McGuckin, a writer and workshop and community events facilitator, and Buchanan, a print-led designer and artist based in Donegal. Her creative practice spans printmaking, books, branding, packaging and bespoke commissions, with her work rooted in a sense of play, nostalgia and joy.

Isla McGuckin’s children’s books have received critical acclaim for addressing complex social challenges faced by children today. She also works with children, young people and adults on initiatives that encourage literacy and creativity.

Trace will be launched on Saturday, November 7, from 4pm to 6pm in the foyer of An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny.

Copies will be posted out from Monday, November 9, making the book available in good time for Christmas.
