Dungloe’s Lauryn Doherty said Kneecap are “so genuine and kind” after styling the Belfast band for their Wembley show.
Lauryn, who is now London-based, works as a freelance fashion stylist. After the initial move, she began to reach out to different Irish and UK-based artists about styling for shows.
“It all just kicked off and I have been working on crazy stuff since,” Lauryn told DonegalLive.
Lauryn’s combined passion for music and styling has led her to work with artists that are signed to labels like Universal, Pellador and Dirty Hit. Then, going on tour with the 1975, Inhaler, YungBlud and Gurriers.
“I have had the pleasure of getting involved with really cool, creative people. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by these people who want me to assist with their projects.”
Kneecap headlined the Wembley Arena, supported by Jelani Blackman and Gurriers. Having first worked with Guerriers on BBC Jools Holland, Lauryn has now been styling the Irish band for over a year.
“They very kindly introduced me to the management of Kneecap, and it has honestly been amazing since.
“I got in touch with them and we decided to arrange some cool looks for the Wembley show. It was an incredible show, I luckily got to go and we did a sit-down with the lads before the show and secured all the looks.
“Right after that, I joined Gurriers in their green room and set up all their looks and got to watch the show and be proud of both of the bands in front of me that I got to style.
“I like to really be involved and be around the artists. It's one thing to dress someone, but it's another thing to style them. I think styling is a much more personal; it needs to relate to not only their individuality and uniqueness as a person, but also to their work and talent. Especially for musicians, their sound and morals influence me a lot in how I dress them.
“Kneecap were such a pleasure, the lads are so genuine and kind and the same with their management, hopefully there is more to come.”
Lauryn works as a freelance fashion stylist based in London, having attended Dublin City University (DCU) to complete a Bachelor of Arts in English and media studies.
While studying, she joined the DCU Style Society, which opened the doors to the world of fashion and music. Following on, she began to work on television shows with RTÉ, doing wardrobe, which gave her an introduction to styling.
After graduating in 2023, Lauryn decided to move to London to begin a career in the creative industry.
“I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to get into. I actually thought it would be fashion journalism, but I was getting drawn into the more creative side of styling, direction and production, which I was really happy and grateful for.
“From there, it has been a big ladder to start at the bottom of, climbing and making a name for myself. I’m still very much on that ladder, climbing gracefully.
“It's a bit mad that every day is different and nothing is the same, but I honestly thrive on that; that's what I love. I always knew I had such an interest in music; a lot of my friends are musicians, and some have become extremely successful. I also have friends who are tour photographers, and being around that, I knew I wanted some involvement in music, but having it through fashion.
“It is a really rewarding job, I’m feeling blessed.”
