The multi-award-winning farce has had audiences rolling with laughter in the aisles of theatres all over the world since it was first performed in the 1960s as a classic French farce by playwright Marc Camoletti, running for almost 17 years and becoming the longest-running French play as a result.

It was subsequently translated into English and has been a huge hit worldwide ever since, even becoming a movie starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. Revived on Broadway in 2008, it scooped up Tony Awards aplenty over its 279 performances.
Set in the 1960s, the play centres around American bachelor Bernard (Darren Winston), who has a flat in Paris and three airline stewardesses (Sarah Mulholland, Laura Gleeson and Andrea Logue) all engaged to him with none of them knowing about the other.
Bernard's life gets bumpy though when his friend Robert (Kieran Kelly) comes to stay, and complications with the weather and a new, speedier Boeing jet disrupts his careful planning, much to the annoyance of his put-upon housekeeper, Berthe (Elaine Gillespie). Soon, all three stewardesses find themselves in his apartment at the same time and catastrophe looms!
Stepping into the director’s chair for the first time is long-serving LMDG member Diarmuid Ó Gallchóir. “Rehearsals have been going fantastically well. The cast have put in a huge amount of work over the last few months and the audiences really are in for a huge treat!”

Auditions for the comedy took place in December and Diarmuid is over the moon with the cast for this huge production. “We have a great mixture of ‘the old and the new’. Audiences will be very familiar with the likes of Elaine and Kieran, who have won many awards over the years with the group, most notably with The 39 Steps, and also with Laura and Darren, who are equally fantastic. We are thrilled, also, to welcome Andrea, who, despite appearing in many musicals over the years, is appearing in her first play and Sarah, who is making her bow with the group. It’s such a great mix!”
The fast-paced play has really kept the actors on their toes with doors constantly opening and closing as the three air hostesses keep missing each other by the slimmest of margins! “The set is really an unnamed cast member, in that it is pivotal to the comedy chaos and the delivery of the play. The timing of everything has to be so sharp, with one door opening and the other closing, and the ladies being hidden from one another.”

“It’s such a brilliant story,” he continues. “We really wanted to bring a bit of comedy and entertainment to audiences, towards the end of the long, dark winter months, with some joy and laughter. It really is one not to be missed!”
Running for two nights only, Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28, at 8pm, tickets for “Boeing Boeing” are available at An Grianán Theatre box office on 07491-20777 or at angrianan.com.
