Letterkenny’s Triona takes Gold Medal in European Surf Lifesaving Championships

Triona McMenamin of Letterkenny was one of six members of the Irish team to win gold medals at the European Surf Lifesaving Championships in Alicante this week.

The team also took five Silver and three Bronze medals and, in doing so, achieved Ireland’s best-ever performance in the event.

Three of the team managers - Charlie Kennedy, Seamus O’Neill and Simon McGarrigle - are also from Donegal.

The 5-day competition, which began last Thursday and finished yesterday, saw the best lifesavers in Europe pitted against each other in a number of race style lifesaving events in both the pool and in the sea.

This year’s competition took place in the searing Spanish heat, with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees each day.

The Irish got off to a great start, winning the first event in the pool, the SERC. This is a simulated rescue situation in which four members of the team have to work together to rescue all the subjects involved. Triona won her gold medal in this event.

“We’re so proud of the team and, of course, as a Donegal man, I’m especially proud of Triona’s performance,” a delighted Simon McGarrigle said yesterday. “It’s a tremendous achievement and, with the European Surfing Championships coming to Bundoran this week, a very timely one!”
