Planning to run the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin this year? Registration for the event opened this week, so make sure you sign up to take part in this great event which is taking place on the June Bank Holiday weekend. In 2011, almost 1,000 Donegal ladies took part in this remarkable event, which this year will take place in Dublin’s city centre on the June Bank Holiday Monday, June 4th.
This year, the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is celebrating 30 years of family health, fun and fitness and to mark the occasion, Flora is running a competition to find families from all over the country that have made the event an integral part of their lives.
Entitled ‘Flora Families’, the competition is searching for the networks of grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, sisters-in-law and mothers-in-law who have made the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon part of their lives by encouraging each other to participate and making it an annual event in their family calendar.
Applicants should provide details of their ‘Flora Family Tree’ which outlines those in their family who have taken part in the event over the years, as well as including a description of how the experience has impacted on their lives as a family. Entries should be sent to email@example.com.
The winner of the ‘Flora Families’ competition will be announced at the start line on race day and they will receive a five star weekend break along with €1,000 for the charity of their choice! Two runner up ‘Flora Families’ will also receive a weekend break and €500 for the charity of their choice.
Sian Jenkins, Brand Manager with Flora, says: “The Flora Women’s Mini Marathon encourages women of all ages to get active and develop a healthier lifestyle through diet and exercise. This year we are delighted to unveil a new, even tastier and healthier Flora spread which has 80% less saturated fat than butter – making it the perfect spread option for you and your family! In 2012 we are focusing on ‘Flora Families’ and how, over the years, mothers, daughters, sisters and aunts have made the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon part of their lives. We hope that the Flora Families competition will get families sharing their stories and encourage others to kick start their training for this year’s event!”
Registration opens this Wednesday (22 February). Last year, maximum participant numbers were reached in less than a month so log onto www.florawomensminimarathon.ie or pick up your copy of the Evening Herald every Wednesday for an application form.
The 10k Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest all-women’s event of its kind in the world, attracting over 40,000 participants each year. Over the years, the event has been won by acclaimed athletes such as Sonia O’Sullivan, Catherina McKiernan, Pauline Curley, Marie Davenport, Rosemary Ryan, and last year’s winner Caitriona Jennings.
Charities from every county in Ireland are the biggest winners from the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon. Since the event began, over €151 million has been raised for Irish charities, making it the biggest single day charity event in Ireland.
