On Thursday, May 10, Letterkenny Open Mic will be presenting Inishowen-based writer Chris Ward performing his intriguing new release ‘Six Things’.
It’s particularly appropriate since most of these songs were first aired and road-tested at open mic nights.
Letterkenny Open Mic, (run by Port Na Failte and Letterkenny Community Development Programme) has turned into one of the North West’s foremost showcases for burgeoning new talent. From poetry to song, dance to instrumental, Letterkenny Open Mic provides an inclusive platform for all.
Chris Ward’s ‘Six Things’ will be performed in its entirety at the end of the regular Open Mic night in May.
‘Six Things’ is an unusual and diverse set of songs. Completely self-penned and self-performed, it highlights Chris Ward’s multi-instrumental and vocal talents. There are elements of performance art as well as music involved - plus some amazing vocal arrangements!
He explains: “Modern technology allows me to multi-track my voice, creating not just harmonies, but vocal loops, ‘soundscapes’ and effects. I can do this exactly the same live as in the studio. A few years ago that would not have been possible. Many of these techniques have been used on ‘Six Things. Going along to open mic nights has given me the chance to try out these ideas - it is so valuable.”
‘Six Things’ is a series of sketches on modern life. The songs touch on everything from unemployment and economic migration, to lovemaking and dreaming. There’s even homage to open mic nights in here too!

Previous releases from Chris Ward have performed well, with sales as far afield as Australia, the USA and Japan.
Chris is also a champion of local music – arranging his workplace Christmas choir and producing the Donegal Tsunami charity CD as well as other projects.
For a great night of local talent come down to Open Mic at Port Na Failte, Station Roundabout, Letterkenny on Thursday, May 10. Doors at 7pm – Chris on stage at 9pm. Free mocktails for all!
