Two Donegal photographers are enjoying the spotlight this week in a major competition.

Stunning pictures taken by Donal Kearney from Buncrana and Emer O’Shea from Ballyshannon are currently in first and second place respectively in the Donegal category of the Fine Things photography competition.

More than 700 entries were received before the July 18 deadline and both Donal’s evocative image of a young boy gazing out towards the horizon and Emer’s thrilling picture of a paraglider over Tullan Strand were quickly among the ten short-listed for Donegal.

In fact, Emer has a total of five images shortlisted, her photo a Lough Melvin sunset is currently second in the Leitrim category and her picture of a group of nuns setting out to climb a mist-laden Croagh Patrick is currently third in the Mayo category.

Galway photographer, David Ruffles, a member of the judging panel, said the quality of the entries is exceptionally high. “I was very impressed not only with the technical competence of the photographs but also with the breadth of subject matter. The collection of photographs shows us not only the topography of the west of Ireland but also a glimpse of how people live.”

Voting continues apace on facebook, until August 1, when the winners will be announced.
