Just days remaining to the start of the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal with thousands of music fans expected to converge on the hometown of the Late Rory Gallagher, to honour one of Ireland’s finest International Rock & Blues Guitarists.
A star-studded line-up of Classic Rock ‘n Blues acts will headline this years 4-day Festival in Ballyshannon from today, 31st May to Sunday 3rd June 2012. The Festival has become one of the most unique music events in Ireland and over the last two years has scooped the Best Irish Festival Award for events of its size at the National Festival Awards. The Rory Gallagher Festival will be the biggest music Festival of the year in the North West.
A mouth watering line-up will appear with legendary Irish Rockers Horslips, former Rolling Stones Guitarist, Mick Taylor & his band, renowned Rhythm ‘n Blues band, Dr. Feelgood, the prolific guitarist from Mama’s Boys, Pat McManus, local Donegal legend, Johnny Gallagher & Boxtie and a host of international Rock ‘n Blues Acts, in all 30 Acts on 15 Stages over 4 days.
Over 12,000 of Rory’s loyal fans from across the world are expected to converge on Ballyshannon for four days of open-air concerts, street gigs, nightly Big Top Concerts, pub gigs, exhibitions and much more.
Also appearing are renowned UK Blues Guitarist, Larry Miller and his band, Dutch Band “Laundromat” who make a welcome return to Ballyshannon after seven years, the crowd favourites Sinnerboy and Shinkicker, Zero Resistance (Derry), Dave McHugh Band (Dublin), The Loop (Germany), Good Taste (Spain), Monica Heldal (Norway) while there is a debut for Glasgow band “Against the Grain” and no Rory Gallagher Festival would be complete without Moonchild and The Skins.
Mick Taylor played with the Rolling Stones between 1969 and 1975, having in 1969 replaced the founding member of Rolling Stones - Brian Jones. Prior to playing with the Rolling Stones, Taylor was guitarist with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Its been said by many music critics that Mick Taylor’s time with the band was the golden era of the Rolling Stones. Ironically after Mick Taylor resigned from the Rolling Stones, the band hunted Rory Gallagher to be his replacement and despite Rory spending a week with the band in Holland, he decided that it wasn’t for him and moved on with his own career.
The legendary Horslips are back with an exclusive Irish Festival date appearing as a headline act at the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon on Sunday 3rd June 2012. Three years ago Horslips made a triumphant return to sold-out houses in Belfast’s Odyssey Arena and there is huge interest in the band’s latest appearance in Ballyshannon.
Jim Lockhart from Horslips said, “we knew Rory very well and we are honoured to be going home to his hometown of birth to celebrate great rock music. Donegal is a spiritual home to Horslips, so returning after many years and doing it for Rory in Ballyshannon is going to be classic”.
Barry Devlin from Horslips said, “I have been to the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon on three occasions and I absolutely love the vibe, the international visitors and for us to play in honour of Rory, its going to be brilliant. The Big Top in Ballyshannon on the 3rd June is going to be magical for Horslips”.
Chairperson of the Rory Gallagher Festival, Barry O’Neill says, “we are delighted that so many great musicians are going to pay homage to Rory Gallagher in Ballyshannon and I know that Rory’s Fans and music followers will be delighted with this line-up many of whom have played through the great Gallagher years, have played the same stages and indeed are hugely respected at home and abroad.”
