The all new Mazda CX-5 arrived recently of the Showrooms of the local Mazda dealership in Donegal, our man on the road got a call from Mc Ginley Motors with an invitation to drive this new vehicle.
On a soft Donegal Tuesday we headed west to Gweedore for the press conference for the forthcoming Donegal Rally. A single key at reception at the Mazda Dealership in Letterkenny awaited our motoring correspondent. The key is never used to start the car it just has to be in your possession and with your foot depressing the clutch and the push of a button the Mazda fires up.
Running late very little time to review the details of the car as I headed up the Mountain Top I was unsure if I was driving a petrol or diesel car as it was so quiet. I don’t think I have ever driven a quieter car before. The torque with this engine was powerful and it left me wondering what size of an engine was under the bonnet.
The radio, which doubles up as a sat nav, and also accommodates the hand free phone, is just something else. I know I should not have done this but it was so easy for me to pair up my phone that I did it on the move! I was linked up safely in seconds and with control beside the gear level, which Mazda call a Multi Commander made life so easy for using the phone, the Radio and the sat-nave
The CX-5 made short work of the journey across the mountain road to Gweedore, passing the cloud-covered Errigal on the way. The driving position works well on this car. The review model had leather covered steering wheel, which just gave a stylish feel to driving the car. Some times the comfort around you could make you forget the how fast your were travelling and the right foot had to be lifted a couple of times to bring the Mazda back to the limit.
On the way back from Gweedore we pulled of the road to get a photo of this fine looking car with Errigal in the background.
The car has a strong presence on the road but is very agile. The engine was in fact diesel and was 2.2 with low tax emissions. The ‘book’ says it pushed out 150 BHP but it felt a lot more with the car pulling away so easily from any of its six forward gears, The model I had was the two wheel drive version with a 180 bop four-wheel drive version on the way.
For a big car this CX-5 was very easy on fuel for the hundred odd kilometres of our journey.
Overall I was well impressed with what Mazda had to offer in the Crossover Vehicle
