Forbairt Dhún Lúiche are organizing a series of walks in and around Dunlewey in July and August, with the first coming up this weekend.
The weekend walk, at 2 pm, Saturday, July 7th, will take participants into Altan Farm, a deserted castle on the shores of Loch Altan, in the shadows of Errigal and Agla Mhór.
“We’ve always run a couple of walks during the Féile an Earagail, the Dunlewey Festival, and they just became more popular,” said one of the organisers. “We thought we’d organise a few to get people out and about and to get ourselves out and about as much as possible.”
For this Saturday’s walk to Altan farm, participants should assemble at Dunlewey Community Centre at 2 pm. Parking at the back of Errigal is limited, so walkers are encouraged to carpool to the spot, to begin the walk at 2.15pm from the entrance to Altan Farm, just past the Errigal carpark on the Termon side.
There is not much information available about the farm’s history. However, evidence of farming practices are still visible along the lake shore and mountains, and the wilderness and cliff faces make ideal habitats for birds and wildlife.
There is a fairly good walking track for most of the route, and the more adventurous may choose to climb the three peaks of the Aghlas or walk and climb to Dún Lúiche via Beaghy, Mucknoght and Errigal. Participants are encouraged to throw on their walking shoes, bring a raincoat, sun cream and a picnic for a fun family day out.
There are more walks planned for late July and during the Féile an Earagail on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
