World Class Bluegrass in Letterkenny

The Regional Cultural Centre is delighted to welcome The Special Consensus, one of the world’s finest bluegrass music groups, back to Donegal.

The veteran, Chicago based, Grammy nominated group will perform their outstanding blend of authentic bluegrass at the Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny on Thursday, January 24 at 8pm.

It is nearly ten years since they played a brilliant and memorable gig at the old arts centre in the Central Library.

Thirty-seven years into their career, The Special Consensus released the Grammy nominated ‘Scratch Gravel Road’, the band’s seventeenth album, in 2012.

The first band album was released way back in 1979 when they began touring on a national basis in America. Since then, the band has toured all over the USA and performed at many of the leading country music venues including the Grand Ole Opry at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium.

International tours have brought The Special Consensus to Canada, South America and Europe, including a number of visits to Ireland and the UK.

The band is led by Greg Cahill, one of the leading figures in bluegrass music, who plays banjo and sings baritone and tenor harmony vocals.

He’s joined by Rick Faris on mandolin and lead, baritone, tenor and high baritone vocals, David Thomas on bass guitar and lead, baritone, tenor and high baritone vocals and Dustin Benson on guitar and lead, tenor, baritone and bass vocals.

The band combines first-rate musicianship with really fine vocals and Donegal audiences will have a chance to witness great string picking and some of the most glorious country harmonies you could wish to hear.

It is unlikely that there will be a finer Country and Bluegrass performance in Donegal this year than The Special Consensus at the Regional Cultural Centre.

The concert is the first in a series of great gigs at the RCC in January and February that are guaranteed to lift the winter blues.

Upcoming gigs include: the brilliant young American singer/songwriter Langhorn Slim on February 15; one of the best folk groups in the world, The Unthanks, on February 21; and At First Light, the exhilarating Irish traditional group led by master piper John McSherry, on February 22.

All concerts commence at 8pm and tickets can be booked through An Grianan Theatre Box Office on 074 912 0777.
