New food tours business hots up
A chef from Donegal Town has joined forces with a chef from Athy to bring ‘foodie’ tourists to Ireland.

A chef from Donegal Town has joined forces with a chef from Athy to bring ‘foodie’ tourists to Ireland., run by Zack Gallagher and Wendy Kavanagh, offers guided food tour holidays, by coach around Ireland.

The itineraries include visits to the best food producers, restaurants, accommodation and food excursions that are available today across the island of Ireland.

At the recent Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards ceremony in Dublin, the company were pipped to the post for the top new start-up award by no less than the giant county Meath tourist attraction Tayto Park!

Zack said: “Over the last 15 years or so, food in Ireland has undergone a massive transformation and the quality of the food being produced here is second to none in the world!“

“We identified a gap in the tourism market for people who have a love of all things foodie and wish to see some of Ireland’s artisan food producers in action on their farms and in their production units.

“There are food ‘trips’ offered by some other websites, where visitors to Ireland can find details of food producers, but they must make their own arrangements to get there by themselves. Irish Food Tours are the only Irish company to provide guided food tours by coach.

“We also are the only Irish tour group that pays food producers for their time, for describing their methods of production to the tour guests, giving demonstrations and tastings. In this way, the tour guests get to hear the ‘story behind the food’.

“We hope that our tours will increase revenue for the artisan producers, restaurants and accommodation providers. By doing so may help generate new employment in our industry.”

Each Irish Food Tour includes a minimum of two visits per day to various artisan food producers, all lunches and dinners in award winning local restaurants and all accommodation.

The company is also working closely with White’s and Associated Hotels Group in promoting the tours.

One of the itineraries starts off at Bellingham Blue Cheese, a company in Co. Louth that was founded by Donegal Town native Peter Thomas and his wife Anita, then works its way onto Fuschia House in Ardee, which is run by Sarah Nic Lochlainn from Burnfoot and her husband Sarajit Chanda.

After visits to other gourmand meccas the tour heads to Donegal, taking in Harry’s Restaurant and Walled Gardens in Bridgend, The Olde Castle Bar & Restaurant in Donegal Town, Killybegs Maritime Centre, and The Olde Village Tavern in Mountcharles before moving on to Mullaghmore.
