A new singing competition is set to be held in Falcarragh in memory of one of Tory Island’s greatest ever sean-nós singers.

Details of a prestigious new sean-nós singing competition were unveiled at a presentation ceremony in An tSean Bheairic in Falcarragh recently.

Corn Chuimhneacháin Éamonn Ghráinne, or the Éamonn Ghráinne memorial cup, will be a sean-nós singing competition to be organised in memory of the late Éamonn Ghráinne Mac Ruairí of Tory Island and Falcarragh.

Éamonn was highly respected as a singer, musician and folklorist and is acknowledged as one of the masters of the Donegal sean-nós singing tradition.

Last spring, the Mac Ruairí family came together with the arts and events committee of an tSean Bheairic to see how they could best celebrate Éamonn’s life.

It was agreed a sean-nós singing competition would be the most fitting way to honour Éamonn’s love and passion for music and song.

A memorial cup was commissioned and Éamonn’s widow, Belle Mhic Ruairi, was on hand to present the cup to the chairman of An tSean Bheairic, Josie Doohan at the launch.

Respected sean-nós singer and scholar, Dr. Lillis Ó Laoire of the National University of Galway, will judge the competition. Ó Laoire, who is originally from Gortahork, was a close friend of Éamonn.

It will be held in an tSean Bheairic, Falcarragh on Sunday June 30.
