First Irish vest for Oisin Ó Gailín as Brendan Boyce chosen for race walk return

Ó Gailín has been selected as part of the Ireland team for the European 10,000m Cup while Boyce has been confirmed as part of the Irish squad for the European Race Walking Team Championships

Oisin Ó Gailín will compete at the European 10,000m Cup

Oisin Ó Gailín has been rewarded for his superb form of late with his first international selection.

The Finn Valley AC athlete has been selected as part of the Ireland team for the European 10,000m Cup to be held in Pacé, France, on May 24.

The Ballybofey man recently clocked his latest Donegal record in the United States, setting a 5k road best of 14:02.

He has also broken Gary Murray’s 5000m record from 2005 (13:44.62) on the track when he finished in 13:41.69 at the Stanford Invitational in California.

Back in December, Ó Gailín - who is now based in Wyoming and coached by Scott Dahlberg - set a new Donegal indoor 3000m record of 7:52.14.

Efrem Gidey from Clonliffe Harriers is also selected for the men’s 10,000m and Laura Mooney of Tullamore Harriers will go in the women’s 10,000m.

Brendan Boyce, meanwhile, has been confirmed as part of the Irish squad for the  European Race Walking Team Championships taking place in Podebrady, Czech Reepublic, on May 18.

The Finn Valley AC athlete, a three-time Olympic race walker, is on the men’s 35km with Adamstown AC’s Joe Mooney.,

Over his favoured distance, the now defunct 50km, Boyce was 10th at the Olympic Games in 2021 having been 19th in 2016 and 29th in 2012.

At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, the Milford native placed sixth.
