Sommer Lecky takes victory in Italy

The Finn Valley AC athlete cleared 1.76 to take the gold at the EAP Atletica 2000 Meeting in Italy while club-mate Mark English pulled up in a men's 800m in Rovereto

Sommer Lecky won the women’s high jump at the EAP Atletica 2000 Meeting in Italy on Monday night.

The Finn Valley AC athlete cleared 1.76 to take the gold.

Lecky edged out Italy’s Viti Eleonora, who also cleared 1.76m having cleared 1.70m, 1.72m and 1.74m on her first attempts at the Polisportivo Comunale, San Vito al Tagliamento.

The Castlederg woman recently cleared 1.80m to win a meet in Rouen, France.

The silver medallist in the World U20 Championships of 2018, Lecky was the Irish Indoor and Outdoor champion last year.

Mark English, meanwhile, was back in action on Monday night, also in Italy.

The Finn Valley Man, who clocked a new Irish record three evenings beforehand in Poland, pulled up with 200m to go at the Palio Città della Quercia, a World Athletics Continental Silver Tour meet In Rovereto.

English, now coached by Justin Rinaldi and working with the Fast 8 Track Club, set a new Irish 800m record when clocking 1:44.34 to win at the Irena Szewińska Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour gold level meet in Bydgoszcz on Friday, taking 0.19 of a second off his previous best, 1:44.53.

That was his second win of this outdoor season having also won at the Track Fest meet in Los Angeles, finishing in 1:44.75.

English’s time on Friday secured his spot at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which take place in mid-September in Tokyo.
