At the World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Cork, Ó Gailín clocked a sub-eight-minute time, wiping out a record held by Gary Murray since 2007

Oisín Ó Gailín set a new Donegal record at the Cork City Sports meet

Oisín Ó Gailín set a new Donegal record on Wednesday night in the 3,000m at the Cork City Sports meet.

The Finn Valley athlete was competing in the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze meeting in the south of the country as he finished in a time of 7:59.00, making him the first Donegal athlete to break the eight-minute barrier in the 3,000m.

The previous record was held by Gary Murray (8:00.45), which was set in Oordegem, Belgium in July 2007, a record that was held for 18 years and two days before Ó Gailín’s effort.

The race was won by Britain’s Henry McLuckie, who set a new Meet Record in 7:36.81.

Finn Valley were well represented at the meet, as Roisin Flanagan was also competing in the 3,000m, finishing eighth in the Women’s race.

Flanagan crossed the line in 8:58.34, with Britain’s Megan Keith winning in 8:38.37.

In the Shot Put, St Johnston native John Kelly finished sixth, with a best throw of 18.23m.

The event was won by New Zealand’s Nick Palmer, who threw out to 19.91m.
