European Masters medals for Kay Byrne and Martin Kerr

Kay Byrne (1215) won individual bronze while Martin Kerr helped Irleand M75 to team gold

Kay Byrne won her latest European Masters medal on Sunday while Martin Kerr won a team gold in Poland.

Finn Valley AC athlete Byrne took bronze in the W60 category in the 5k road race in Torun.

The road race, held alongide the Indoor Championships, gave Byrne a chance to get back onto the podium - and she duly obliged.

Byrne was third in her category, finishing in 20 minutes and 28 sedconds.

Sabine Hofer from Austra won the W60 category in 19:49 with Irish athlete Irene Clements second in 20:25.

Byrne was just three seconds behind Clements in third and the Irish team narrowly missed team medals, placing fourth.

Milford AC’s Martin Kerr was the sixth M75 in the 5k road race - helping Ireland to team gold in the process.

Kerr finished in 24:16 with Irish team-mate John Murphy second in 21:10 and Patrick Sweney finishing in 22:07.

Kerr’s fellow Milford AC man Brian Boyce reached the M45 400m semi-finals. Boyce was third in his semi-final in 53.97 seconds, bowing out in the process.

Boyce came through his heat in 55.41 seconds, placing second to advance.

In the M65 60m, Tir Chonaill AC’s Shane Toolan finihed fifth in his heat on Sunday when going 8.89 seconds. Toolan still has the 200m to come later in the week.

Barry Mackey of Letterkenny AC will compete in the M60 8km cross country while Catriona Devine from Finn Valley AC will be vying for a medal in the W50 1500m.
