The 70kg Dungloe boxer was aiming for a place in the last 16 on Merseyside but came up short on a 3-2 split on the judges' scorecards

Matthew McCole exits World Amateur Boxing championships with split decision loss 

Matthew McCole was edged out in his last-32 bout of the World Amateur Championships in Liverpool on Saturday as Ronald Chavez Jnr of the Philippines defeated him.

The 70kg Dungloe boxer was aiming for a place in the last 16 on Merseyside but came up short on a 3-2 split on the judges' scorecards. 

In the end, they read 29:28; 28:29; 28:29, 29:28; 28:29. The Irish corner of Damien Kennedy and Zaur Anita looked unhappy with that call as the Illies Golden Gloves fighter becomes the fourth Irish fighter on the bounce, after Louis Rooney, Martin McDonagh, and Daina Moorehouse, to suffer defeat.
