A 27-year-old man who assaulted a member of staff in a Donegal Town pub has been fined €1,000.

Rory O’Loughlin of Melmount Road, Strabane was in Donegal Town on a stag night on February 11, 2023. He assaulted Jordan Ryle, causing him harm, at the Diamond, Donegal Town. The offence is contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

O'Loughlin appeared before Donegal Town District Court on Monday.

Inspector Cora Earley told the court that gardaí were alerted to a fight outside McCafferty’s Bar on the night in question.

A male being restrained by door staff was accused of punching a member of staff - Jordan Ryle - on the face. The victim required hospital treatment.

“The accused was brought to the station and continued to be aggressive,” said the inspector.

A victim impact statement heard that Mr Ryle was left with a scar and suffered physical and mental stress that was having a detrimental effect on his life.

The court heard that O’Loughlin had no previous convictions.

Solicitor John Fahy or said: “He has never been in trouble in his life. He is in full time employment. I ask you to deal with him as leniently as you can.”

Judge Deirdre Gearty acknowledged that the defendant had pleaded guilty, had apologised to his victim and had a positive reference.

However, she said: “What concerns me is Mr Ryle’s victim impact statement which suggests that there is something that he is describing as a permanent scar and mental trauma.”

The judge imposed a conviction and fine of €1,000. Recognisance was set at €100 cash and a further €100 bond in the event of an appeal.
