A sizable quantity of home heating oil has been reported as stolen in west Donegal.
Some 500 litres of oil was taken from the tank at a house at Glassagh, Derrybeg, between midnight on Friday, October 25, and 8am on Saturday, October 26.
“If anybody observed suspicious activity or vehicles in that area between those dates, we ask them to please make contact with Gardaí in Milford on 074-9153060,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Many of us are now filling our oil tanks in preparation for the cold months ahead. There are a range of preventative measures that can be taken to prevent the theft of home heating oil from your tank.
“Check oil levels frequently. Try to arrange smaller but more frequent oil deliveries. Install automatic movement sensor security lighting around the tank. Plant shrubs or install fences to screen tanks from view from the road. Install and use lockable access gates, and erect lockable fencing around your tank, including over the top. Consider fitting an alarm system which warns if the oil level drops suddenly. Be vigilant following a delivery. Be aware thieves may return to steal replacement oil following an initial theft. Always take note of suspicious vehicles’ registration numbers and report them to Gardaí.”
