Donegal is among the worst offenders in the number of drivers caught without insurance

Galway was the biggest offender with an increase of 199%, the Dublin South Central Garda district recorded 166% and Laois/Offaly on 137.8% - Donegal's total was the fifth worst in the State, just behind Dublin North Central at 125.2%

Garda figures show that between Q2 2023 and Q2 2024 there were significant increases in the number of vehicles detained by Gardaí across every county

Donegal was amongst the worst Garda districts in the country recording a 123% increase in the number of drivers caught driving without insurance between 2023 and 2024.

Galway was the biggest offender with an increase of 199%, the Dublin South Central Garda district recorded 166% and Laois/Offaly on 137.8%. Donegal's total was the fifth worst in the State, just behind Dublin North Central on 125.2%.

Ireland South MEP and member of the EU Transport Committee, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, will raise the price of insurance for Irish motorists in the Transport Committee of the European Parliament and has called for urgent measures to address the spike in the number of drivers caught driving without insurance in every Garda district in Ireland.

The Ireland South MEP has called for the immediate implementation of the Action Plan for Insurance Reform promised in the Programme for Government.

Ní Mhurchú described the Garda figures as "shocking". Garda figures show that between Q2 2023 and Q2 2024 there were significant increases in the number of vehicles detained by Gardaí across every county under Section 41 of the Roads Traffic Act 1994 “from a driver without an approved policy of insurance”.
