Gardaí have confirmed that two public gatherings in Letterkenny passed off peacefully.

Around 1,500 people attended demonstrations, which took place back-to-back at the town’s Market Square.

A United Against Racism rally was held shortly after noon before a march and protest - attended by a larger crowd - which organisers said were about illegal immigration.

Amid a large garda presence, including the Public Order Unit in riot gear and the Air Support Unit, just one arrest was made.

A man in his 30s was arrested for public order offences. The man was later released without charge.
