A Limerick man has pleaded guilty to the serious assault of a woman in Donegal.
Larry McCarthy appeared before Judge John Aylmer at Letterkenny Circuit Court this week.
The 21-year-old, of Cornmarket Villas, Little Gerald Griffin Street, Limerick, spoke only to plead guilty when he was formally arraigned.
He is charged with assault causing harm to the woman on August 16, 2024 at Lower Main Street, Letterkenny.
The charge is contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997
The victim in the case was present in court for the brief hearing.
A previous court sitting heard how McCarthy did not know his victim.
McCarthy has also been charged with the production of an article capable of inflicting serious injury, namely a belt with a metal buckle, contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.
McCarthy was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place, contrite to section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, and with using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in public, contrary to section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, as amended by section 22 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008.
Mr Peter Nolan BL, barrister for McCarthy, instructed by solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien, said his client has no previous convictions and asked that a full probation report be prepared.
Judge Aylmer requested a probation report to include an assessment for community service.
McCarthy was remanded on bail to appear again before the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court in February, 2026.
At a sitting of Letterkenny District Court in May, Judge Éiteáin Cunningham refused jurisdiction in the matter.
The court heard that Gardai arrived at the scene of a disturbance and saw McCarthy put his face into the woman’s face in a head-butt gesture.
Gardai informed the court that the woman pushed him back before McCarthy took off his belt and struck her in the chest with the metal buckle.
