Man accused of serious assault in a Carndonagh bar considers entering a plea of guilty

The Book of Evidence was served at Carndonagh District Court, which continues to be heard at Buncrana Courthouse.

The Book of Evidence has been served on an Inishowen man accused of a serious assault last year.

Anthony Cantwell, of Corvish, Carndonagh, is charged with assault causing harm contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

The charge follows an alleged incident at the Persian Bar in Carndonagh on July 15, 2024.

The Book of Evidence was served on the 45-year-old defendant’s solicitor at Carndonagh District Court, and the case will progress to Letterkenny Circuit Court as a result.

Defence solicitor Frank Dorrian asked that proceedings against his client be adjourned until December. He said Mr Cantwell is considering entering a plea of guilty to the charge before being returned to the Circuit Court.

“I’d ask you to adjourn for one month, to enable us to consider progressing on a signed plea,” Mr Dorrian explained to Judge Emile Daly.

The judge granted the application, and the case was adjourned to December 16, with Mr Cantwell remanded on continuing bail until then.

Mr Dorrian also applied for Legal Aid for a Senior Counsel [barrister] in the matter.
