A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a Garda.

Seamus Cooley appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

The 50-year-old is charged that on May 23, 2023, at St Jude's Court in Lifford, he did assault a Garda.

Cooley, who is originally from Buncrana but whose address was given as Castlerea Prison, faces a number of other assault charges, the court was told.

Garda Pauline Doherty gave the court evidence of arresting and cautioning Cooley at Letterkenny Courthouse.

She told the court how Cooley refused to take a copy of the charge sheet when she attempted to hand it to him.

Garda Doherty then told how the accused shouted at her and refused to listen while roaring that all Gardai in Letterkenny and Buncrana are "crooked bastards."

He then shouted at Garda Doherty: “Fuck off, you bitch."

Cooley's barrister said he had been instructed to apply for bail in the case even though the accused is in custody on other matters before the court.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said he could put the matter back for a week and apply for a bail pack.

Judge Emile Daly asked what is the situation with the other matters before the court and was told Gardai are awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The case was adjourned to December 1.
