A councillor has said that Donegal County Council has to further enforce legislation after only one owner was prosecuted on account of their dog fouling over a period of two years.

Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty said dog fouling is an issue in Dunfanaghy, Falcarragh and Creeslough. He said dog owners needed to carry plastic bags with them when they take their dogs walking.

He added that dog owners ought to know where their dogs are at all times. He said that dogs can cause great distress to pregnant sheep causing them to lose their lambs.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Noreen McGarvey said she had received a number of inquiries in relation to dogs 'running riot' on blue flag beaches and asked council officials what can be done in relation to this.
