Popular Donegal business secures retention approval for shop extension

McLaughlin’s Shop and Café in Greencastle granted retention for shop extension
Retention planning permission has been granted for an extension at the long-established McLaughlin’s Shop and Café in Greencastle.
Donegal County Council approved the application by Bernadette McLaughlin of Sea Ray Limited for the retention of an existing single-storey rear extension at the popular village business.
The north-facing extension, located to the rear of the existing shop premises, features a white dash render finish and a blue-black mono-pitched roof designed to match the existing building.
According to planning documents submitted with the application, the extension provides additional cold-room storage, kitchen space, and ancillary facilities to support the day-to-day running of the business.
McLaughlin’s has operated as a family-run village shop in Greencastle since 1977 and expanded in 2015 to include a coffee shop serving both local customers and visitors to the area.
Donegal County Council granted retention permission subject to three planning conditions.
These include that no surface water from the site may discharge onto the public road, while measures must also be taken to ensure that water from the road does not enter the site, to prevent flooding.
The planning authority also requires that all existing healthy trees, shrubs, and hedgerows on the site be retained unless otherwise agreed, with any vegetation that subsequently dies to be replaced.
