Work has begun on the new all-weather pitch of the Creevy Activity Hub project after a successful four-county 100km fundraising cycle.

Contractors moved onto the site in May to start work on phase one of the Creevy Activity Hub project, which includes the all-weather pitch and will cost in excess of €275,000.

The Creevy Activity Hub project aims to provide shared facilities for Creevy, Ballyshannon, and the wider area. The project includes an all-weather pitch, a walking track, floodlighting, a multi-use games area, changing facilities, expanded parking facilities, and a vibrant community garden.

A major part of the project’s fundraising was the four-county 100km cycling event on March 29. A spirited group of 83 cyclists pedalled their way across Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, and Fermanagh, raising more than €10,000 in funds, and bringing the project’s fundraising total to €160,430 so far.

Creevy’s oldest resident, Bridget McPhelim (103), had waved the chequered flag to send the cyclists on their way to complete the 100km challenge.

The route started and ended at Creevy National School, just outside Ballyshannon, and took riders through the picturesque landscapes of Leitrim into Sligo, before diverting into Kinlough, Belleek, and Rossnowlagh.

Eleanor Rooney, the Chairperson of the Creevy Activity Hub, has led the project. Her husband, John Rooney, a seasoned cyclist himself, led training sessions and prepared the route for the cycling challenge.

“We were blown away by the level of commitment and support from our cyclists, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who contributed in some way,” said Eleanor.

A participating cyclist, Jamie Timoney, commented: “There were Sunday morning training sessions where it was less than desirable weather, but everyone stuck with it. We built not just strength in our legs but a strong sense of camaraderie too.”
