Twenty-six patients were reported waiting on trolleys at Letterkenny University Hospital today, according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The INMO daily Trolley Watch Report for today reported that 45 patients in total were awaiting beds at the Letterkenny hospital, including 26 patients on trolleys in the emergency department.

Yesterday, November 15th, the INMO figures reported 32 patients were waiting on a bed at the Letterkenny hospital, including 18 patients on trolleys.

The Setanta University Health Care Group, of which Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is a member, reported that the LUH emergency department remained extremely busy this morning, with significant numbers of patients awaiting admission to the hospital.

In a statement, the health care group said, "We apologise to patients and their families for these delays."

The Full Capacity Protocol has again been implemented at LUH and all efforts continue to be made to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge. It has also been necessary to defer non urgent elective procedures, Setanta reported.

Management at the hospital are advising people who are attending the emergency department at LUH that they can expect delays. They are encouraging the public to attend the emergency department only in the case of real emergencies and say they should contact their GP or GP out-of-hours service in the first instance.

Letterkenny University Hospital again apologises to all patients and their families for any distress caused as a result of these delays.

Today's INMO Trolley Watch Report also said 13 patients were on trolleys at Sligo University Hospital.
