McHugh to raise school bus transport changes
Donegal North East TD Joe McHugh is to challenge the Minister for Education in the Dail this week to clarify her department's changes to primary school bus transport qualifications, which he says could interfere with the education of local primary school students and could affect attendance numbers at some rural primary schools.
"The Government must clarify changes to the distances for qualifying primary school students for school transport," Deputy McHugh said. "Local primary school pupils attending certain schools under the closed School Rule may be affected by the Government's change.
"Continuity is a key part of education, and the new rules may force many local parents to send children to different schools. This could reduce numbers at some rural schools, which already have low numbers.
"If the Department of Education is trying to reduce costs it should look a little closer at its own transport regime before it targets rural schools.
