Importance of craft industry highlighted at 'Wintertime' exhibition in Ramelton

The importance of the craft industry to the Irish economy was emphasised at the official opening of a major design showcase in Ramelton at the weekend.

The three day ‘Wintertime' exhibition highlighted the work of the county's leading designers and artisan craft workers.

Exhibits in ceramics, jewellery, textiles, woodwork, batik, knitwear and furniture featured at the design event hosted in the local Heritage Centre.

Launching the event, Michael Tunney, C.E.O. of the Donegal County Enterprise Board who sponsored the fair, praised the Donegal Design Makers for their initiative and expertise, pointing out that they had rebranded themselves and had exhibited their work at the Dublin Craft Centre in recent times.

Revealing that there were over 5,700 craft workers involved in the industry in Ireland, he told Friday's opening: "It's good to see both new and well established crafts people involved in the Donegal Design Makers exhibition." The organisation had, said Mr. Tunney, taken significant steps forward in the past eighteen months.

The three day event included a fashion show featuring the work of Liam Grier.

The Enteprise Board C.E.O. said ideally Donegal should have a special centre to enable artists to sell their products but the ‘Wintertime' exhibition and a similar summer fair along with other future events would help promote the works of the local designers.
