Two Donegal watermen have been acknowledged for their contribution to Donegal water safety at a national awards ceremony.

A 20 year service award for service to Irish Water safety (ISW) was given to Ballyshannon man Paul McGuinness.

Fellow Ballyshannon resident, well-known surfer Brain MacCrthaigh, was awarded a "Seiko Just in Time " award for a dramatic rescue he took part in last summer.

Paul, who became involved in water safety in 1973 later went on to become an IWS instructor in 1985 and an examiner in 1993.

Brian's award came for averting a potential tragedy in early September.

Brian, who is also the Chairman of the Irish Surfing Association, was about to enter the waves at Tullan Strand in Bundoran when he observed two young swimmers being dragged out to sea by a strong rip current. Before entering the water, Brian told members of the public to observe and call for help if necessary. He then entered the water with his surf board and went to the children's aid. He brought the two children to safety by taking the girl to shore first and then went back to rescue the boy and successfully brought him back to shore where both children were reunited with their parents.

Both men received their awards at a recent ceremony held in City hall in Dublin.

The IWS have been promoting water safety in Ireland since 1971.
