Telephone service for elderly announced in Donegal Town
By Dermot Carr
Donegal Family Resource Centre has announced a free community based good neighbour support service for older and vulnerable people. The "Good Morning" service provides a daily phone call, alerting others if the call is not answered, in addition, the service provides telephone support, enabling users to share worries, concerns and connecting them with local activities and other services.
Chairman of Donegal Family Resource Centre, Jim McLaughlin, commented, "at this time of crisis both economic and with the harsh weather many people are feeling isolated, anxious and vulnerable, this service is aimed at breaking this sense of isolation and vulnerability. It is funded by the HSE and is manned by volunteers from the community. We realise through recent experience of the volunteers that this is a life line for many people, it enables older people and people in need of support to maintain independence, to remain in their homes and to function in their own communities. It provides vital support on an ongoing basis and is part of our approach to develop and maintain networks, services and support throughout the community".
The service is being spread across the county and supported by two employed workers in Buncrana who provide support to community and voluntary organisations rolling out the project. Volunteers are trained and garda vetted to provide the service and are always in demand.
