Larkin will not not contest election

Letterkenny-based Fianna Fail Councillor, Dessie Larkin, said yesterday that he will not be contesting the forthcoming general election in Donegal North East.

"There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of me contesting the general election, but that's all it was really - talk. I wasn't selected as a Fianna Fail candidate and I'm a member of the Fianna Fail party - that's it. And I won't be running as an independent either," Cllr Larkin added.

While acknowledging Fianna Fail will take a massive hit when the country goes to the polls, he predicted that his party will retain a seat in both Donegal constituencies.

Cllr Larkin was Niall Blaney's director of elections when he took the final seat in 2007. Asked yesterday if he would fill the same role for the imminent general election, Cllr Larkin said: "I'm not in a position to comment on that at the moment."
