Tourism can make massive contribution
Fine Gael Cllr. Martin Harley said the tourism industry can make a massive contribution to the Irish economy, and that Donegal can be a big player in the sector because of the county's natural beauty and the tourism college located in Killybegs.
Cllr. Harley, a former student of the college, said he was confident that party leader Enda Kenny, TD, as taoiseach, would ensure that Donegal was not left behind. The party's tourism policy would amalgamate Filte Ireland and Tourism Ireland to create a one-stop tourist shop, among other measures.
"We have a unique culture which attracts people from all over the world and the beauty of our country has been a major draw for tourists coming to our shores," Cllr. Harley said. But he said the county needed to give better value for money, adding that the way to do that was to address overhead costs that he said were "crippling" businesses.
