A biker who posted footage online of himself speeding through Barnesmore Gap at speeds up to 290kph, has been branded “an absolute lunatic”.
The head of South Donegal Garda Traffic Corps, Sgt. Iggy Larkin made the remark after viewing the footage online.
The anonymous biker, who calls himself MrJohndoex45, brags of a “9-minute run from Lidl’s roundabout at Donegal town to the speed limit signs in Ballybofey” and claims he reached speeds of up to 180pmh (just under 290kph). The distance travelled in the nine minutes is 28km.
In the video, which appears to have been shot during daylight hours, the biker overtakes a number of vehicles, crossing over both continuous and double white lines on several occasions.
Sgt. Larkin called the biker “an absolute lunatic on the road” who has “no concern for his own life or for the lives of other road users”.
Although there has been some speculation in media circles that the video is a fake, Sgt. Larkin said he had no reason not to take it at face value.
Sgt. Larkin said he was contacted on Saturday night by a member of the media, who had seen the footage on facebook. “Apparently the video was first posted on youtube five months ago, but it was first brought to my attention at the weekend.
“Coincidentally, this comes at a time of year when we normally crack down on those who are speeding. Once the good weather arrives, we tend to see more people in cars and on bikes coming along to Donegal at the weekends and, some of them, I’m afraid, are inclined to speed.
“I would warn the public generally that the number of speed cameras and speed checks throughout the county has been increased in recent times, and that members of the Garda Traffic Corps are constantly on patrol.”
