The Creevy Pier Hotel was packed to the rafters last Wednesday and Thursday with very, very satisfied diners.

The occasion was the Junior Irish Culinary Team's Cook-Off, which was organised to raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. The proceeds are going to buy a defibrillator for the Creevy Pier Hotel.

Tickets for both nights were completely sold out. Those lucky enough to attend were able to watch the chefs preparing their five course meal, which of course, everyone enjoyed immensely. After that it was dancing the night away to the wee hours, with music by the Logues.

Jason Horkan, manager of the Creevy Pier Hotel, couldn't be more pleased with the success of the event.

"We're absolutely delighted with the reaction we got locally and the support we got both nights. It couldn't have been a success without all the people who came along and gave us such great support. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the two nights.

"This was a first for us and we'll definitely be doing it again in September. It all came about because we had some contacts in the Panel of Chefs Ireland, which organises the big Chef Ireland competition every February in the RDS and also encourages members to participate in other competitions around the country throughout the year.

"In addition to raising funds for the Heart Foundation and the defibrillator, we wanted to raise awareness of the Panel of Chefs Ireland and the great work they are doing. The organisation was founded in 1958 to promote the development of all aspects of professional cookery. There's no doubt how far dining out in Ireland has come since then.

"We chatted to them a few months back and bounced the idea of hosting a Cook-Off here in Creevy. They were keen and we organised it between us. They brought up the Irish Junior Team, which consists of eight chefs, as well as their coach and team manager. The two nights were just fantastic, with top of the range food. And, of course, it was all for a good cause.

"They're coming back to us again for two nights in September and we expect a huge demand for that

A spokesperson for the Panel of Chefs Ireland said: "We encourage all members to participate in cooking competitions, which are of enormous benefit in affording chefs the opportunity to demonstrate their many talents and skills. They also get the chance to meet new friends and chefs from other parts of the country and to exchange new ideas and techniques.

"We were thrilled with the reception we got from the people here in Creevy. They made us feel so welcome and were very appreciative of all our efforts."
