Donegal restaurant comes out tops

A south Donegal restaurant which is no stranger to winning prestigious awards and accolades has done it once again having scooped the top award at the recent SO Sligo Food and Culture Festival last weekend.

A south Donegal restaurant which is no stranger to winning prestigious awards and accolades has done it once again having scooped the top award at the recent SO Sligo Food and Culture Festival last weekend.

Smuggler’s Creek Restaurant in Rossnowlagh, which could also lay claim to the top award for the best view in Ireland has been the recipient of yet another top prize thanks to the inventiveness of its husband and wife culinary team, Joe and Deirdre Clinton.

Joe won first prize at Failte Ireland’s New National Irish Dish Competition 2011 at the The SÓ Sligo Food & Culture Festival last weekend with their joint creation of a “Trio of Venison”

Joe together with his wife Deirdre who is the Head Chef at Smugglers Creek, came up with the idea of the dish which was very different to the Irish Stew that Joe served up and won at last year’s World Professional Irish Stew Championship and a far cry from the traditional bacon & cabbage or coddle which is often perceived as our national dish.

The aim of this prestigious competition was to celebrate Irish food, the talent of the Irish people and the wealth of ingredients that are natural to Ireland. Amateur and professional chefs were there to create a new signature dish for Ireland, suitable for service in all of Ireland’s finest restaurants.

Joe and Deirdre Clinton are long time members of the Irish Culinary Team and leading members of the Panels of Chefs of Ireland for over a decade. They have won many awards over the years on the International Culinary Championship Circuit and are recognised among the world’s top competition-level masters of the culinary arts.
