Four-year-old Daniel Cleary, who died in a tragic accident near his home at Drumbar, Donegal town on Thursday evening, will be laid to rest on Sunday.
Daniel, who would have been five in August, died after a six-foot-steel door became detached from a shipping container and fell on him.
The accident occurred in a yard beside the family home where his father Keith runs a haulage business. Mr Cleary was away on business in Scotland when the accident took place.
A postmortem was carried out at Letterkenny General Hospital today (Friday), followed by removal of the remains to the family home.
Garda Supt. Jimmy Coen called the death “an unbelievably freak accident” and said enquiries are being made as part of their preparation for a coroner’s inquest.
Daniel’s funeral will take place at 1pm on Sunday in St Patrick’s Memorial Church of the Four Masters, where his grandparents, Paddy and May Gildea, are sacristans.
Fr Willie Peoples, PP said Daniel was “a happy wee child and he had a very happy face - there was a loveliness about him”. His parents, Fr Peoples added, “are understandably beyond consoling”. Their grief “has spread throughout the whole community”.
