Man charged in relation to late night incident

A 46-year-old Letterkenny man appeared in court in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, yesterday morning charged in relation to an alleged stabbing incident in Letterkenny in the early hours of Sunday.

John Boyle, of Leck Cottages in Letterkenny made no reply when charged with four counts of assault causing harm to four people, including a garda sergeant on Letterkenny’s Main Street on Sunday, the court heard.

Sergeant Eunan Walsh said the accused was arrested at 12.35am and was charged at 6pm later that day but made no reply to any of the charges put to him.

Judge William Hamill released John Boyle on bail of €1,800 when a third of it was lodged in cash in court and the case was adjourned to Letterkenny District Court on September 15.

Garda Sergeant Aidan Doherty is recovering after having to undergo surgery after receiving an injury to his hand. A garda spokesman said they hoped their colleague would be released from hospital today.

Three other men injured in the alleged assault were all door staff at the Voodoo Night Club

and their injuries were not said to be serious.
