A new telephone response system is to be introduced at Letterkenny General Hospital from next week which will make it easier for external callers to contact departments within the hospital.
Callers won’t have to go through the switchboard to get through to departments such as out-patients, radiology and the laboratory. Callers will also be able to dial internal extensions directly if they have access to the number.
“The new system will mean that callers will be able to get through to the Department required without having to go through a call queue at the switchboard which is currently the case. At peak times the high volume of calls means that people can wait unnecessarily for an operator to connect a call and for callers who know which Department they need to reach or have the extension number, will now be able to get connected directly,” a hospital spokesperson said.
The switchboard will continue to be manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and switchboard staff will continue to be available to take and connect calls. But hospital authorities expect that the new system will significantly reduce the queue waiting time for callers.
“The new system has already been introduced by many other hospitals with very positive results and we are very pleased to be in a position to do the same at Letterkenny General Hospital,” added the spokesperson.
The system will come into operation from Wednesday next, 27th.
