Human rights campaigners have praised Fianna Fáil Sen. Brian Ó Domhnaill for seeking cross-party condemnation of the recent Israeli naval interception of the French boat, the Dignité.
Speaking in the Seanad chamber on July 19, the day of the incident, Sen. Ó Domhnaill said, he wanted to express his “disgust at the fact that the French boat Dignité was attacked by Israeli commandos”.
“I hope that all parties support the attempts by the leader of the Seanad on this side to table a cross-party motion condemning the military action of the Israeli commandos, in order to emphasise Ireland’s renewed stance in our attempt to bring about Palestinian rights to aid, trade and statehood,” he said. “I hope all parties and Members of this House, and indeed the Dáil, will support this effort.”
Fiachra Ó Luain of Inishowen was on last year’s flotilla bound for Gaza when it was attacked. He commended the efforts of Sen. Ó Domhnaill and the work of Thomas Pringle, independent TD, and Pádraig MacLochlainn, Sinn Féin TD, in supporting the Irish Ship to Gaza.
“They are all doing Donegal and Ireland proud,” Mr. Ó Luain said. “I believe that if cross-party progress is made on this issue through the Seanad it will also illustrate that a second house of parliament of some sort is needed in the Ireland of the future.”
