Letterkenny General Hospital still needs to recruit five junior doctors to bring it up to its full quota.

Hospitals around the country have faced difficulties in recruiting junior doctors and it was reported last week that just 60 of 280 doctors recruited from India and Pakistan to fill position in the HSE have taken their posts due to delays in registration with the Irish Medical Council.

In response to a query from the Donegal Democrat/Donegal People’s Press the HSE said that Letterkenny General Hospital did have 11 vacancies . Five vacancies in the hospital’s emergency department still have to be filled. The five positions are being filled by locums, the HSE said.

The services of locums will put a further strain on budget of the hospital which is facing an overspend of close to €9m by the end of the year.

There were eight vacancies at Sligo General Hospital and all have been filled.

The delays in registration have been due to doctors not supplying supporting documentation and delays in the HSE providing other material.

The delays in the junior doctors starting has put pressure on hospitals and other doctors are having to work longer hours to ensure the system copes, the HSE said.

The HSE said the registration process is complex and that the Medical Council amended the required HSE documentation in late August.

The vacancy levels will reduce significantly as the doctors now here are registered and become available, the HSE said.
