Donegal County Council says it is is investigating more than 2,400 cases of alleged non-compliance of planning permissions.

council said planners were looking into 2,408 live enforcement cases across the county.

More than 17,000 individual rural housing applications were granted permission between 2000 and 2010, making up approximately 85 per cent of applications during that period.

The largest number of investigations was in the Donegal electoral area (629), followed by Inishowen (569), Glenties (562), Stranorlar (264), Milford (227) and 157 in Letterkenny electoral area.
