Donegal Deputy Joe Mchugh is to address a session of the British Conservative Party’s annunal conference in what is thought to be a first for a Fine Gael TD.
Deputy McHugh is will attend the Northern Ireland session of the conference in Manchester today which will be attended by Northern Ireland secretary Owen Patterson.
Deputy McHugh has been invited to the conference in his role as the Co-Chair of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly.
He will address the session on how the Republic and Northern Ireland must pool resources to achieve savings.
“The Conservative Government in Britain is working with the DUP First Minister and the Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister at Stormont to drive a severe austerity programme in Northern Ireland, which is eliminating the duplication of public facilities that developed in the second half of the 20th century to service separate sides of a divided Northern community. There is a huge amount of unnecessary duplication on this island – during this financial crisis it makes sense for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to pool resources and to share services.”
