Stacey Carr-Kennedy, from St. Columba’s Comprehensive, Glenties, was named runner-up in the first ever Take Away My Way all-island Cookery Competition, organised by St. Angela’s College, Sligo and sponsored by safefood.
Stacey cooked cajun chicken pizza with side salad and was one of 32 finalists at the recent all-island final in St. Angela’s College. Finalists were judged by a panel of experts and prizes included games consoles, gift vouchers and goody bags.
Almost a thousand entries from the island were received in the competition where young secondary school students were encouraged to display their culinary skills while also promoting the importance of healthy eating, by cooking their own healthier version of their favourite takeaway dish.
Amanda McCloat, Head of Home Economics at St. Angela’s College, Sligo, commented: “Home Economics students across the island are developing the skills to create take away dishes for themselves, family and friends, and this competition enables more young people to showcase their healthy cooking abilities. It is not difficult to create healthier alternatives to take-away foods that are tastier, cheaper and can be made without leaving home.”
Dermot Moriarty, safefood, said: “We were delighted to sponsor this competition and the standard of entries was very impressive. Whether studying home economics or just keen about food, learning to cook and eat healthily are lifelong skills students can benefit from.”
The competition was open to all post primary students on the Island of Ireland and YouthReach Centres.
