Two of Donegal County Council’s longest serving senior staff members are stepping down this month

County Secretary Eunan Sweeney retired this week after over 30 years’ service in the council. The county’s acting Chief Fire Officer Bobby McMenamin is to retire at the end of the month.

In his role as county secretary Mr Sweeney has sat through countless meetings of the local authority over the years where his extensive knowledge of the local government system was often called upon.

Mr. McMenamin has overseen a service that has been subject to a lot of change in recent years and has opened new fire stations across the county.

Deputy mayor of Donegal Barry O’Neill yesterday paid tribute to both senior officials. He described Mr Sweeney as “a gentleman of the highest order” adding, “he was very meticulous in his work. His work went beyond the call of duty in a lot of instances and always would give the definitive advice. When he spoke in the council chamber at a meeting what he said was gold. He has given great service to the county over the years and I am sorry to hear he is leaving us because he has a huge bank of knowledge in relation to local government and local authority legislation which will be very hard to replace.”

The Deputy mayor said Mr. Bobby McMenamin has overseen huge change in the fire service with new stations opening across the county. “He has seen a lot of change over the years and was a very good servant, very efficient. There have been a lot of changes too regarding fire fighting actions and he has done a very good job in what was a difficult challenge at times. But he was very efficient and always available to the members of the council, to answer their concerns.”
