Pupils from St Eunan’s National School, Raphoe have beaten out hundreds of other competitors to take the top award in the National Show Racism The Red Card competition.
Gerard McBrien, Joshua Gibson, Anita McMonagle, Elisha Cole, Ben O’Donnell and Dylan Brolly received their award at a gala ceremony in the Avivia Stadium yesterday (Thursday) where President Michael D. Higgins was the guest speaker.
The entries came from primary and secondary schools, youth groups and Youthreach projects who had taken part in the Show Racism The Red Card educational programme. The art forms spanned from written accounts of personal experiences of immigrants who faced racism as young people to comedy video entries and a very intricate Mosaic.
The competition is used to spread the intercultural anti racism message to young people.
Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racist charity that has been growing from 1995 when Shaka Hislop donated £50stg to a local anti-racism campaign in Newcastle upon Tyne. Show Racism the Red Card is now present in United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Ireland.
A spokesperson said: “The aim of our organisation is to produce anti-racist educational resources, which harness the high profile of professional footballers to combat racism. Our educational materials are very accessible and have been very successful.
“The campaigns in each country have education through sport as a common goal but draw on different local resources to get the message across. So in Ireland, the involvement of the Gaelic Players Association and Irish Rugby Union Players Association is of great importance to us.”
