Singer Susan Boyle made a surprise visit to Donegal at the weekend. She thrilled fans by her willingness to chat, sign autographs and even pose for photo with them.
Neil and Helen Doherty were enjoying dinner at the Lake of Shadows on Saturday night when Neil noticed the celebrity guest. “I was so excited to see her. I didn’t want to disturb her but I felt I just had to congratulate her on her performances on X Factor and her success. I told her how much I admired her mastery of singing, her control, her breathing and thanked her for bringing so much enjoyment to people. She was absolutely lovely, so friendly and casual. It was wonderful to meet her.”
Caroline Doherty Hegarty (Neil’s daughter) encouraged her son Keegan, aged 11, to meet the singer too. “He was so thrilled. At first he was quite shy but she was so nice and down to earth that she soon put him at his ease. She had that lovely smile you always see her with on tv.
“She signed an autograph for Keegan, with a big heart on it, and posed for a picture with us. Keegan was over the moon. She told us she decided to visit Buncrana because her parents used to come here quite often and would stay near Swan Park. She also said she was very happy to see that the picture house was still open. We asked her how long she was planning to stay in the area and she just looked at us with a twinkle in her eye and didn’t answer.”
The singer also visited the Halfway House, Burnfoot on Saturday, attended 12.30 Mass at the Oratory in Buncrana on Sunday and treated patrons of Rosato’s in Moville to a song on Sunday night.
