A member of the Travelling community from Ballyshannon was attacked and stabbed in Dublin last weekend as he was bringing his young son to compete in a national boxing tournament.

A member of the Travelling community from Ballyshannon was attacked and stabbed in Dublin last weekend as he was bringing his young son to compete in a national boxing tournament.

There are unconfirmed reports that a man known to the victim may have been involved in the incident. The victim was James also known as Jimmy Ward from Ballyshannon. Mr. Ward was travelling through the city on Friday afternoon bringing his son Terry to compete in last weekend’s national championships which took place in Tallaght.

While Mr. Ward’s car was stopped at traffic lights at Nelson St. an attacker jumped off the footpath and stabbed Mr. Ward. There are unconfirmed reports that the alleged attacker would be well known to the victim.

Mr. Ward was brought to the Mater Hospital and his condition is understood to be comfortable in St. Monica’s Ward.

Gardai in Dublin have confirmed that they are investigating an incident that took place at Nelson Street in the city centre on Friday afternoon and that the victim was taken to the Mater Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

As we go to press no one has been questioned or detained in relation to the incident.
